How to setup Shopify POS

1. Install & activate Shopify POS

  • The Sales channel needs to be added in the Shopify backend
  • The plan ($89/mo) needs to be activated

2. Download the Shopify POS app

The Shopify POS app can be used on any Iphone or Ipad which can be used in you Brick & Mortar store and serve as "computer".

3. Processing Payment In-Person

In most countries, you can use Shopify Payments and therefore also use the default/native Shopify card reader solution. Otherwise, if you are in a country where Shopify Payments are not yet available, you would need to use "third-party" payment provider.

For in-person sales, we need to have a card reader machine (insert, swipe or contactless).

If Shopify payments are not available in your country, in the Shopify POS app when processing an order for a customer, you would need to select the custom payment method and mark the order as "paid" manually once you have processed payment on the third-party card reader.

Other Payments Available:

You are also able to select "cash" payment and simply use a cash register outside as a third party.

4. Connecting the Barcode Scanner & Ticket Printer

Once again, normally Shopify has a list of pre-approved printers & scanners that can be used.  However, if you are in country that does not accept Shopify payments, you would need to use Third-Party ones and connect them to the App via Bluetooth.

To use the barcode scanner, you will need to make sure that a barcode is added for each product or variant of a product (color, size, ...).

5. Hardware to buy & Setup

  • Use an Ipad as computer (with Ipad holder)
  • Buy & connect Bluetooth barcode scanner
  • Buy & connect Ticket Printer machine (example here)
  • Cash Register (if you do not have one yet)

6. In-Person Order Process

When a customer comes in the shop with their articles, you would scan each of them so they are added in the POS basket. If the customer already exists in the system, you can simply select them otherwise create a new one. Once they are ready to pay, select the appropriate payment method, enter the amount to charge (via the card reader) and process the payment. Once the payment is approved, you can mark the order as paid and either send the customer an email receipt or print it via the printer.
